I AGREE!!!!!!!
I couldn't get past page 30.

NOW!!!!

You should read The Northern Clemency by Philip Hensher, if you have not already done so! It is the best modern book that I have read since The Slap -- it is over 600 pages long and I will cry when I have finished it - it is SO fab!!

Thank you, Jane. Franzen is the most over-hyped and over-rated US novelist since the last over-hyped and over-rated US novelist.
I have read both of these, and, unfortunately for me, wearing glasses and writing long sentences does not a great writer make.
I could go on, but I feel weary even thinking about them.

Really really over rated could get on with it all.

While were at it other over rated books include Midnight's Children and 1984.

1984 is a good - although not great - book. Midnight's Children - like most of Rushdie's stuff is -- unreadable.

Do not read The London Train by Tessa Hadley.

She is a derivative writer - it is all about posh people , loosely linked to academia having literary bonks. False and pathetic. Also - she pretends she is not Peter Nichols' niece - why else would she get published?
