Kanye West is a knob. All surface and no feeling.

Who Kanye West?

anon 1139 I do not think you are right, smooth and skilful his sounds may be, but they are full of longing, and it is real. Kind of torch songs in a different world.

Jonny you are putting me on, right?

it's a different thing they do, dolt, who are you to say I "should" be listening to anything?

Steady on it I dont want a fight about Jesus West. It was meant as a suggestion not an instruction.

You really should though

I like Brel, I've heard of Stromae, but Kanye West, never. I assumed he was a footballer.

stromae (French yoof talk "verlan", opposite of "invers", which means "backwards", do try and keep up) which inverts words, Stromae is verlan for "maestro", he is francophone Belgian not French, which means he speaks and sings a beautiful French, and he does not sing in English, which too many French artists do, largely because of the linguistic politics of Belgium - English is what the Flemings speak when they want to communicate with people who are not Dutch or Flemish. My favourite of his is called "Te Quiero", which is sung in French, but the refrain and the title - well spotted - are Spanish for "I Want You".

ACtually, my favourite at the moment is that Rhianna song 'The Only Girl In The World'.

I sing it to my four cats and change it to 'The Only Cat in The World'.

They seem to like it...........

Have you used lastfm? It is a really fascinating (well for me anyway) insight into your listening habits.

I have been using it for four years and it would appear that I am still obsessed with the music I was listening to circa 79-89 when I was aged between 12 and 22.

I listen to a wider range of music but their is a pattern which correlates back to this core. I am drawn to anything that has influenced or been influenced by my favourite music of that period. I have obviously thought about this far too much but I enjoyed the ride.

As long as you have been using itunes for a while then you should be okay. Let me know what you think.

I am sure that whatever music - or even clothes, today - strikes a chord with something from our most significant past - is bound to resonate whether we know why or not.

Oh the years, the years as Hardy said.
Speaking of which - one of the cliches and one that we all sneer at ( I know I certainly did) is 'schooldyas are the happiest days of your life'.At the time, I thought 'My God - if this is all there is and this is going to be the summit then I might as well pop my clogs now.'
However, from the vantage point of more decades than I care to state and if you substitute 'significant' for happy then I think we're on to something.
I now think that everything I have done since has been influenced by those years and has been in reaction to them - although that was never at all apparent at the time. Everything that went right, subsequently, and wrong, subsequently, was related to that. Everything I do now still is. A chilling thought.
