Yes, the eyes of Caligula and the mouth of Marilyn Monroe.

Well, you know - I reckon they BOTH look bloody marvellous!!!

Now I'm wondering if he said "the lips" of Marilyn Monroe.

Anyone got the original French?

Sorry, another thought. I don't like that fresh insult at the top of your blog.

It's an incorrect use of "due to". It should be "as a result of being the lowest form...", or "because you are..."

Your critics' usage of English is as wonky as their spelling.

he said "lips" - "les yeux de Caligula et les lèvres de Marylin Monroe"

Don't these fools know that these words were spoken by Francois Mitterand to refer to Mrs Thatcher?

If not, then read some history.

Meryl/Margaret both look fab.

Anon at 23:41, no one commenting on this article has made reference to who spoke the words, only what was actually said. Oh, and Margaret never looked fab, but I accept that she was a slightly bizzare pin up for the true blues, of whom I suspect you are one.

Sauti @ 22:17: I would parse the insult by making the people who are doing the despising the referent of "lowest form of scum". Admittedly it would be more accurate with the introduction of "their" making "being" a gerundive, but it still makes sense.

Sorry Anon - I am a paid up member of the Labour Party.

Margaret Thatcher looked very glamorous - especially in that Russian fur hat.

You don't have to like her or her politics to admit that.

Tories would also admit that Barbara Castle looked very glamorous and so they should.

Jonny: I like it!

Anon at 23:41: I didn't mention it as I assumed that everyone knew who said it. BTW, Mitterrand, not Mitterand.

Jane: Thanks for the French original. In case you haven't seen the dead-tree versions of the UK papers today, the Times, Telegraph, Grauniad, Mail and Express all have this photo on their front pages.

Nearly as hot as the original, god bless her.

Yeah - BUT The Daily Mail gets it wrong and points it to a look alike shot with a photo of MT rather earlier in her career.
The shot of Meryl Streep is based on a photograph of MT used to adorn the covers of her memoirs, written shortly after she left office. Look at it.

Mrs Thatcher also dressed in this garb when she did the accompanying television interviews to promote the book. There were two 90 minute shows.
Oddly, they were eerily similar to the Diana interview with Martin Bashir - in more ways than one. Watch them.......

I remember all too well because I was a Labour PPC at the time and 'Emily's List' - also 'Labour Womens' Network' instructed us all to watch Thatcher's interviews and model ourselves on her with regard to dress and style. We were told that she oozed 'authority' and that she was the ideal female role model as a politican. The LWN reps at the time - not MPs then, were Barbara Follett and Barbara Roche - and Valerie Wise - never an MP.

YES - IT IS TRUE. And yeah - I do see what they meant then. She did have a glamorous authority - equalled of course by that in Barbara Castle but never seen before or since. And no - Yvette C etc aren't even in the room. Mrs Thatcher has been ravaged by Alzheimer's disease for the past six years or so. She doesn't look like that now. Neither does she look as she did wearing that large furry Russian hat when she said, abroad, in the midst of a General Election 'I am on an important mission, representing my country'. The years, the years.
