Claire

Claire
I said goodbye to a friend this week. Claire was someone I used to know in parliamentary days. She was alone at the end, as we all are. Her working life, and her social life, pretty much, revolved around the House of Commons, where she worked. She was good fun, had a keen sense of the ridiculous, and as someone said at the funeral, "You'd buy Claire a drink because you wanted her to stay". She didn't stay with us long enough. It was good to see some old friends and colleagues there. Thanks to Claire's friends who organised the funeral, both at Mortlake and at St Mary's Undercroft in the Commons. I was glad to have been there. Goodbye Claire and thank you for the laughs.

    I'd echo all of that. She and Crusher added to the gaiety of nations and could always be relied upon to show the witty and human side when you felt inordinately and indulgently sorry for yourself.

    Thanks to Claire I have the inside story of Bojo's time on The Times; a desperate desire ( still not satisfied) to go to Corsica and also I now know that you DO NOT WEAR A KILT SOUTH OF THE BORDER UNLESS ATTENDING A CALEDONIAN NIGHT. She was humane, humorous, HUMAN and she will remain in the Commons as part of its essence -- a lovely and loved, friendly shade.

    her full name doesn't matter. She wasn't a public figure. This post was just for those who knew her, and for those who know me to know that I lost a friend.
