I wonder if it was sup...Interesting final question. I wonder if it was supposed to make them feel homogenous, a national race descended from the Belgae. In the century and a bit before its foundation it had been Spanish, Austrian, French and Dutch, passed like a counter during the wars of succession. It might have made some sense to be seperated from the Northern Netherlands at the treaty of Utrecht, but's a ridiculous state. It always did my head in during A level history, because I could never remember who owned it at any particular point.
